I got this book over the weekend: 97 Ways to Make a Dog Smile.

It advocates putting a small blob of peanut butter on an overactive dog's tail. I'd like to see that on my mom's crazed Border Collie mix!

I'd argue in favor of running a strip of tape down a cat's back from nose to tail. They think they're stuck under something and will crawl around until they get out from under it.
